LABYRINTH MEDITATION

"The labyrinth was designed by an intelligence we cannot fully understand. But this much I do know. The labyrinth is truly a tool for transformation. It is a crucible for change, a blueprint for the sacred meeting of psyche and soul, a field of light, a cosmic dance. It is a center for empowering ritual."

~ Dr. Lauren Artress (President and Founder of Veriditas)

Connect with your inner self.  Access your intuition.

The Labyrinth Meditation is a tool for transformation, connection and healing on a deep soul level. Walking the labyrinth helps you to quiet the mind, connect with your inner self, and access your intuition. If you are looking for answers, wish to receive healing, or to bring about a change in your life, solutions and inspiration can arise into your awareness as you walk the labyrinth's path into the center and back out again.

Walking the Labyrinth

If you have access to a full-size labyrinth I encourage you to use it, but if you do not there are two finger-style labyrinths below available to download. One is the ancient Cretan labyrinth discovered on Crete in Greece and the other is the famous Medieval labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral. Simply choose the one your heart is drawn to. Print it out and enjoy 'walking' the labyrinth with your finger. You will receive the same benefits as you would if you were walking a full-size labyrinth.

The Steps

Follow these steps for both full-size and finger-style labyrinths.

  • Center yourself, still your mind and become aware of your breath.

  • Stand or place your finger at the entrance to the labyrinth.

  • Bring to mind a concern, question or situation that needs transforming.

  • When you feel ready begin. Go at your own pace. There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. Do what feels the most comfortable to you.

  • Follow 'The Three Stages of the Walk' to deepen your experience.

  • When you have completed the walk consider recording highlights or important insights from your experience in your journal.

  • Take it Slow: Ease back into your day, especially if you had a deep experience.

The Three Stages of the Walk

Purgation (Releasing) ~ A releasing, a letting go of the details of your life. This is the act of shedding thoughts and distractions. A time to open the heart and quiet the mind.

Illumination (Receiving) ~ When you reach the center, stay there as long as you like.  It is a place of meditation and prayer. Receive what is there for you to receive.

Union (Returning) ~ As you leave, following the same path out of the center as you came in, you enter the third stage, which is joining God, your Higher Power, or the healing forces at work in the world. Each time you walk the labyrinth you become more empowered to find and do the work you feel your soul reaching for.
